indiana licensing requirements
Licenses Available: Cosmetologist, Electrologist, Esthetician, Nail Technician, Massage Terapist, Barber, Shampoo Operator
Required Hours:
Barber: 1500 hours
Cosmetologist: 1500 hours
Electrologist: 300 Hours + 1500 Hours beauty culture course or 700 hours esthetics course (licensed)
Esthetician: 700 hours
Manicurist / Nail Technologist: 450 hours
Shampoo Operator: 300 Hours
Minimum Requirements: Applicants for Cosmetologist, Estheticians and Nail Technology must be at least 18 years of age and have at least a 10th grade education or its equivalant.
Reciprocity: Yes, to candidates from a jurisdiction with equivalent hours. Candidates who have completed training in another jurisidiction but is not licensed may not becoming licensed by Examination in Indiana.
However, Indiana cosmetology schools MAY accept education hours for COSMETOLOGY, students transferring from a non-licensed school providing the Indiana cosmetology school verifies the students previous education. It will be the Indiana cosmetology school’s responsibility to determine the number of additional hours/subject matter needed to complete the Indiana requirements. The student must complete the Indiana specific course work of 40 hours in sanitation and 10 hours in statutes and rules in the Indiana cosmetology school regardless of the number of hours completed in the non-licensed school.

- Download the application indivated below and file along with the items indicated
- Application for Cosmetology License by Reciprocity, State Form #43493. This application covers Cosmetology and Esthiology.
- Photograph that is at least 2" X 3" in size
- Certification of license form from your jurisdiction. The board will not accept a copy of your license.·
