hawaii licensing requirements
Licenses Available: Cosmetologist, Barber, Esthetician, Nail Technician,
Required Hours:
Cosmetology - 1800 Hours ( 3600 in apprenticeship )
Esthetics - 550 Hours ( 1100 in apprenticeship )
Nail Technician - 350 Hours
Barber - 1500 Hours
Minimum Requirements: High School education or equivalent, and be at least 16 years of age. (17 years of age for Barber.)
Reciprocity: Granted to all with a current license from a State with equal or greater requirements.
Work experience is a consideration if you have less schooling than required. All applicants are required to take the written exam.
The license will only be recognized for the hours of training that are recognized in the jurisdiction that issued the license. If the jurisdiction's training hours are less than the number required for Hawaii, then you must make up the difference with school training, or apprentice hours, or proper evidence of ONE YEAR of licensed experience with the out-of-state license.
Applicants must sumit:
- Documentation of possessing an education equivalent to the completion of high school (diploma, GED certificate, transcript or letter from the school, evidence of attendance or graduation from college). All documents must be in English. OR, you must provide verification of at least ONE YEAR of experience as a licensed beauty operator in another jurisdiction to satisfy the general education requirement. Use form COSM-02.
- Attach a copy of your transcript that reflects the breakdown of subjects and hours of your schooling. The transcript is necessary to determine if the subjects and hours are in compliance with the Board's curriculum.
- Apprentice in Hawaii: Attach the "Progress Report" forms that reflect the subjects and hours of training, and the "Notice of Completion or Withdrawl."
- Attach a copy of appropriate license or a state board verification from state that you are currently licensed in.
- Attach original experience verification forms totaling not less than one year of experience from a qualified person (owner, manager, supervisor).
