connecticut licensing requirements
Licenses Available: Barber, Cosmetology/Hairdresser, Electrologist
Required Hours:
Barber: 1500 Hours
Cosmetician / Hairdresser: 1500 Hours
Electrologist: 600 Hours
Minimum Requirements: All applicants must be at least 16 years of age and have evidence of an 8th grade education.
Reciprocity: Applicants with a valid license from a state whose requirements are equal to or higher than Connecticut will be credited theit total number of hours towards licensure. Candidates must submit:
- Completed notarized application (.pdf) with photograph and fee of $50.00 in the form of a bank check or money order payable to, “Treasurer, State of Connecticut”;
- Applicants must indicate on their notarized application that they have completed the eighth grade or its equivalent.
- Equivalency may be demonstrated by successful completion of the GED
- A License Verification form from all states in which the applicant is or has been licensed current or expired forwarded to this office from the appropriate authority in any U.S. State or territory in which the applicant is or has ever been licensed as a hairdresser/cosmetician. Most jurisdictions charge a fee for verification. Be sure to contact the jurisdiction for fee information.
- If the licensing examination was completed in a language other than English, verification of successful completion of the TOEFL examination;
- Affidavit of Hours Form submitted directly to this office from your hairdresser/cosmetology school;
- Verification of licensed work experience form submitted directly to this office from the salon manager or owner verifying dates of employment, duties, and total number of hours worked. Please select this link for the required form.
